Flying HIgh: Stories & Poems from Kapiti was launched this week with great excitement. Written and illustrated by the children of Kapiti, it is full of imaginative stories and poems and engaging drawings. We put out 100 chairs for the launch at our community centre and were astonished when people kept piling in. We must have had over 160 people. Fifty of those present were the talented children, aged 8-13, from our 12 local schools who had had their work published in Flying High. And most of the rest of the audience were proud parents and grandparents, teachers and librarians. Each of the successful contributors was presented with their own copy of the book as were their schools and our four local libraries. The rest sold like hot cakes! The project was an initiative of the Kapiti Children's Writers' Group Charitable Trust of which I am a member. It is a great team to work with as we each have our own strengths. My role was to edit the collection and put it together, which, as you can imagine, was a real joy. Just as it was to see the delighted looks on the children's faces as they accepted their copy of the book from another of our members, Mandy Hager, winner of the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year Award in this year's New Zealand Book Awards.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
